Field Audio Recorders
For lavier microphone systems, they are usually wired via 3.5mm cable (aux) so you can choose to:
1. Record your audio directly to a smartphone.
2. Record your audio to the included device if you purchased a lav system.
3. Record to an external field recorder.
For shotgun microphones, they are usually wired via XLR cable, so you will need to purchase a field recorder, and an accompanying SD card to capture the audio.
We recommend field recorders from brands like ZOOM or Tascam that support XLR connection.
Recording Audio Common Issues
1. The audio gain and general settings on the field recorder were set incorrectly, and therefore the audio sounds bad, once you have reviewed it.
2. The audio was not mastered correctly, even though the original audio captured on-set was perfect.
Learn Lama would advise that you speak to a video or audio professional to ensure that your equipment is set up correctly, and that you also understand how to master the audio when you are editing your course.
To help teachers produce their best work and create a course that students love, Learn Lama recommends a list of digital camera brands, that can be used to capture video content:
1. Sony Alpha Series, Sony Cinema Series, Sony A Series, Sony AV Series
2. Canon EOS, Canon Cinema Series
3. Blackmagic Cinema Series
If you already own a digital video camera, but it’s not part of this list, please email us directly with the name and model number so that we can check the video quality, and advise you further.
Learn Lama currently supports global 1080p streaming, with a web player that allows quality adjustments for 720p and 480p streaming.
We can support 4K streaming, but from our research, students do not use this format, as most household computer displays are still 1080p.
We advise that you record your course in 4K, if you have the opportunity to, and after editing your course, you can deliver your files in 1080p.
The added benefit of this approach is that you can digitally zoom from 4K footage when you are editing your course, without losing overall quality.
If your camera only supports 1080p, that is also totally sufficient, but be cautious of editing-in digital zooms as this will degrade the streaming experience.
To help teachers produce their best work and create a course that students love, Learn Lama recommends a list of lighting brands, that can be used to capture video content:
1. Aputure Lights
2. Amaran Lights
3. Neewer Lights
4. SmallRig Lights
5. eBay Non-Branded LED Lights
Learn Lama advises that you consult with a video expert for setting up complex lighting set-ups, however you should ensure that the teacher is lit well from the left and right side when you are filming – this can be achieved with a soft-box lighting system as illustrated below.
Learn Lama has a criteria for how video courses should be framed. Please make sure your course meets this requirement.
1. Teachers should be framed in a medium shot. Please check the illustration below to compare what that looks like.
2. Teachers should be considerate about leaving space above their head when filming, alongside even spacing on each side. Please check the illustration below for reference.
3. Teachers should adjust the vertical height of their tripod so that the camera lens is perfectly level with the eyes.
To help teachers produce their best work and create a course that students love, Learn Lama recommends that the filming location is considered in detail and has an aesthetic appeal, alongside the overall presentation.
1. Interesting Furniture
2. Hanging Artwork
3. Painted Walls
4. Ambient or Accent Lighting
5. Textured Walls
6. Large and Open Spaces
7. Contrasting Colors
8. Planned Outfits
9. Interior or Exterior
Learn Lama does not allow courses to be filmed against a plain background, unless the circumstances are very specific.
The reason for this decision is so that every course published on our platform can have a unique brand identity, and can therefore be marketed properly.
To help teachers produce their best work and create a course that students love, Learn Lama offers guidance for the editing process:
1. If you do not have a powerful computer to edit large video files, and happen to be editing in Adobe Premiere Pro, please research ‘Proxy File Editing’.
2. During a lesson, please add visual stimuli such as titles, or on-screen text (where applicable) to help students understand what you are teaching.
3. If you need to add background music to a course lesson, please keep the music volume relatively low, so that it does not distract students from learning.
4. Please do not use copyrighted music or sound effects. Always license your sound files from reputable sources. Some well known examples are: Epidemic Sound, Musicbed, and ArtList.
5. Every course published on Learn Lama must have a trailer. This is the initial video that is viewed by students on the sales page. This video can also be used as a marketing tool to raise awareness.
